Composition:
Tablets:
Clavenen 375: each coated tablet contains: 250 mg Amoxicillin as trihydrate+
125mg clavulanic acid as potassium salt.
Clavenen 625: each coated tablet contains: 500 mg Amoxicillin as trihydrate+
125mg clavulanic acid as potassium salt.
Clavenen 1000: each coated tablet contains: 875 mg Amoxicillin as trihydrate+
125mg clavulanic acid as potassium salt.
Powder for oral suspension:
Clavenen 125: each 5 ml suspension contains: 125 mg Amoxicillin as trihydrate + 31.25 mg clavulanic acia as potassium salt.
Clavenen 250: each 5 ml suspension contains; 250 mg Amoxicillin as trihydrate + 62.5 mg clavulanic acia as potassium salt.
Properties:
Clavenen is a mixture of antibacterial amoxycillin and clavulanic acid.
Clavenen is a bactericidal antibiotic agent with a notably broad spectrum of activity against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria.
The beta-lactamase inhibitory action of clavulanatc enhances the spectrum of amoxycillin to embrace a wider range of organism, including many resistant to other beta- lactam antibiotic these including: Streptococcus, Saphylococcus, Haemophilus influenzae, Esherichia coli, Klebsiella, Salmonella species, Neisseria, Bacteroides.
Indications:
Clavenen is used for the treatment of infection caused by susceptible organism:
Upper and lower respiratory tract infections: tonsillitis, sinusitis, otitis media, acute and chronic bronchitis, bronchopneumonia.
Genito-urinay tract infections cystitis, uretgritis, pyelonephritis,
Bone and joint infections: osteomyelitis
Skin and soft tissue infections: boils, abscesses, wound infection
Peritonitis, septicaemia, intra-abdominal sepsis, postsurgical infections
Clavenen is used for the prophylaxis against infection associated with major surgical proceduros.
Contraindications:
Patients with hypersensitivity to pennicillin Patients with infections mononucleosis.
Side effects:
Clavenen is generally well tolerated, the most side effects are: skin rashes, urticaria, anaphylactic reactions, hepatitis, cholestatic jaundice, diarrhoea, skin and mucocutaneous candidiasis.
Precautions:
If any hypersensitivity reaction occurs, clavenen should be discontinued. Clavenen should be used during pregnancy only if clearly needed Clavenen should be used with casution during lactation Doses should be adjusted in patients with renal dysfunction.
Drug interactions:
Probencid prolongs the half-life of clavenen
The concurrent administration of allopurinol and clavenen increase the incidence of rashes.
Dosage and administration:
Adults:
Usually dose: clavenen 625 tablet every 12 hours or clavenen 375 tablet every 8 hours.
In severe infections: clavenen 1000 tablet every 12 hours or clavenen 625 tablet every 8 hours.
Children 3 months-12 years: 30 mg/kg every 8 hours, in severe infection, increase frequency to 6 hourly intervals.
Children 0-3 months: 30 mg/kg every 12 hours
Treatment should not be extended beyond 14 days without review.
Since both the clavenen 375 and 625 tablets contain the same amount of clavulanic acid, 2 tablets of clavenen 375 are
not equivalent to 1 tablet of clavenen 625, therefore 2 clavenen 375 tablets should not be subsituted for 1 clavenen 625 tablet.
Doses in renal impairment:
Patients with a glomerular filtration rate of 30 ml / minute should not receive the clavenen 1000.
Patients with a glomerular filtration rate of 10 - 30ml/ minute should receive the clavenen 625 or 375 every 12 hours.
Patients with a glomerular filtration rate less than 10 ml/ minute should receive the clavenen 625or375 every 24 hours.
