BITOPHYLLIN contains two supstances : Theophyllin (a well known bronchodilator) and Guaifenesin (an expectorant).
COMPOSITION:
Each capsule contains : Theophylline 150 mg
          Guaifenesin   90 mg
Each 5ml contains : Theophylline 50mg
    Guaitenesin 50mg
PROPERTIES:
BITOPHYLLIN combines the bronchodilator effect oftheophylline together with the expectorant effect of guaifenisin
Theophylline relaxes bronchial smooth muscle, relieves bronchospasm, and has a stimulant effect on respiration, it stimulates the myocardium and nervous system.
Guaifenisin promotes lower respiratory tract drainage by thinninig bronchial secretions, increasing sputum volume, thereby facilitating removal of mucus. These combination helps coughs to become more productive and less frequent and relieves bronchospasm.
INDICATIONS:
BITOPHYLLIN is used for the relief of acute bronchial asthma and bronchospasm associated with chronic bronchitis and emphysema.
CONTRAINDICATIONS:
Hypersensitivity to one of the components.
SIDE EFFECTS:
May cause nausea, headache, cardiac palpitation, agitation and epigastric pain
PRECAUTIONS:
BITOPHYLLIN should be used with caution in patients with severe cardiac disease, hypertension, hyperthyroidism, peptic ulcer BITOPHYLLIN should be used with caution in pregnancy and lactation
DRUG INTERACTIONS:
Concomitant use with other xantines medication should therefore be avoided phenytoin, rifampicin, may increase theophylline clearance Cimetidine, macrolide antibiotic and qumolones may reduce theophylline clearance.
DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION:
Capsules : One capsule 4 times daily.
Syrup: Adults : 1-2 two tablespoonful 3 times daily.
Children: 3-6 teaspoonful 3 times daily.
                6-13 one tablespoonful 3 times daily.
PRESENTATION:
Boxes of 20 capsules.
Bottles of 100ml syrup.
