Composition:
- Each tablet contains 500 mg Metronidazole
- Each tablet contains 250 mg Metronidazole
- Suspension: each 5 ml contains 125 mg Metronidazole
- Suspension fort: each 5 ml contains 200 mg Metronidazole
Properties:
Metronidazole is 5-Nitroimidazole derivative with actively against protozoa in including (Entamoeba histolytica, Giardia intenstinalis. Tirchomonas vaginalis, Balantidium coli) and against most anaerobic bacteria. Its mechanism of action is thought to involve interference with DNA.
Metronidazole is readily absorbed following administration by mouth, peak plasma concentration 5 – 10 mcg/ml are achieved usually within 1-2 hours after single dose of 250 and 500 mg.
Indications:
- Hepatic and intestinal amoebiasis – giardiasis – trichomoniasis
- Treatment and prophylaxis anaerobic bacterial infections.
- Non- specific vaginits
- To eradicate Helicobacter pylori in peptic ulcer disease (in combination with other antimicrobials).
Contra-indications:
- Hypersensitivity to the drug.
- Pregnancy and lactation.
Side-effects:
Metronidazole's side effects are dose related. The most common are gastrointestinal disturbance, nausea, vomiting, unpleasant metallic taste, diarrhea, glosstis, dry mouth, numbness and tingling in the extremities, and nizziness and skin rash.
Precautions:
Barkanidazol should be used with great care in patients with blood disturbances, or active disease in central nervous system. Doses should be reduced in patients with severe liver disease. Treatment should be discontinued if signs of peripheral neuropathy develop.
Drug and Administration:
Tablet should be taken with or after food.
Suspension should be taken at least 1 hour before food.
Amoebiasis adults: 1.5 – 2 g, children 40 mg / kg of body weight in divided doses 2-3 times daily for 5 – 7 days.
Giardiasis adults: 250 or 500 mg 3 times daily for 5 – 7 days.
Giardiasis children: 15 mg l 1 kg of body weight in divided doses for 5 days. It can be renewed after 10 days.
Trichomoniasas adults: 250 mg 3 times or 500 mg twice daily for 7 days and it can be renewed after 7 days. Sexual partner should be treated concomitantly.
Trichomoniasas children:
1 – 3 years 50 mg 3 times daily for 7 days.
3 – 7 years 100 mg twice daily for 7 days.
7 – 10 years 100 mg 3 times daily for 7 days.
Or 15 mg / kg daily in divided doses.
Anaerobic bacterial infections two tablets 500 mg followed by 500 mg every 8 hours for 7 days.

- A box of 20 tablets 500 mg.
- A box of 20 tablets 250 mg.
- A bottle of 100 ml suspension.
