Compostion:
Each tablet contains; trimethoprim 80 mg. sulphamethoxazole 400 mg.
Each tablet contains: trimethoprim 160 mg. sulphamethoxazole 800 mg.
Each 5 ml suspension contains: trimethoprim 40 mg. sulphamethoxazole 200 mg.
Each 5 ml suspension contains: trimethoprim 80 mg. sulphamethoxazole 400 mg.
Properties:
Barkatrim is antibacterial. It is a mixture of the sulphonamide sulphamethoxazole
with Trimethoprim, in the proportions 5 to 1.
The two antibiotics act synergistically to produce abacteriostatic action against a wide range of gram-positive and gram-negative.
Indications:
Respiratory tract infection: acute and chronic bronichitis, bronchiectasis, pneumonia. Pharyngitis, sinusitis, otitis media.
Urinary tract infections acute and chronic cystitis, pyelonephritis, prostatitis.
Contraindication:
Hypersensitiviry to sulphonamida.
Patients with severe renal or hepatic or with blood disorders.
Pregnancy and lactation
Prenatal and newbom infants during six weeks of life.
Side effect:
Skin may cause: nausea, vomiting, stomatitis, skin rashes, leukopenia , thronbocytopenia, jaundice.
Precautions:
Treatment should be discontinued immediately a rash appears because of the risk of severe allergic reaction.
Adequate fluid intake is necessary to reduce the risk oferystalluria.
Dosage should be reduced in renal impaiment and elderly patients.
Drug interaction:
Barkatrim may increase the effects of warfarin, phenytoin and digoxin. Barkatrim increases the hypoglycemic effect ofsulphonylurin.
Dosage and adminstration:
Adults: twice daily 1 tablet from barkatrim fort and 2 tablets
from barkatim.
Children: 6 weeks to 5 months of age: Itea spoon (2.5 ml) twice daily.
6 month to 5 years of age: 1 tea spoonful ( 5 ml) twice daily.
6-12 years of age: 2 tea spoonful or / 8 mg/kg/ daily from barkatrim suspension
